Abstract Expressionism

Abstract expressionism was a movement during Post World War II, characterized by fields of color and abstract forms. There are many computational thinking concepts that can be applied to abstract art in general. For example, pattern recognition is a major part of abstract art because there are always ways to identify patterns in any art piece. One activity is to have students create an abstract piece either inspired by a non-abstract work they admire or a piece they have personally created in the past. By turning an existing work into an abstract piece, this promotes pattern recognition. This is because the student would be creating a theme or sense of cohesiveness. The goal is not to create something that looks abstract, but instead, finding patterns in an existing work to use as inspiration. This also uses the concept of abstraction because you are pulling out details from the existing art piece and creating something new.
