2nd Place Winner of Spring 2021 Session 2

by Team Good: Carter Bristow, Andrew Childers, Daniel Szabo

Abstract: In this project, we analyzed how COVID-19 has impacted Virginia. Using data from the Census Bureau and Virginia Open Data Portal we created a combined data set which includes data regarding COVID-19 hospitalizations, deaths, cases by county, by race ethnicity, by income, and other relevant statistics, we were able to find from the Virginia Open Data Portal. We used the combined data set to create a prediction model for per capita COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in Virginia by count. Using our model, we determined which factors were most important in predicting deaths, hospitalizations, and cases. We were able to get high accuracy for our case predictions using a Random Forest Regression Model but had significantly lower prediction accuracy for deaths and hospitalizations.
