Abstract: Climate change is one of our state’s most critical and complex challenges, and the adoption of electric vehicles will play a key role in Virginia’s transition to a carbon-neutral economy. To support electric vehicle adoption, we built a recommendation system that uses machine learning clustering algorithms to recommend electric and hybrid vehicles based on a user’s desired features (price, size, model, etc.) and calculates the cost savings and emissions reductions generated by choosing an electric car. After experimenting with multiple different clustering algorithms, we built a simple user interface and conducted user testing to determine which algorithm produced the best recommendations. By helping users to find the electric vehicle best for them, we hope to spur electric vehicle adoption and contribute to an emissions-free Virginia.
