Abstract: The world is undergoing a global pandemic due to the rapid transmission of COVID-19. According to the guidelines issued by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), mask use for the general public not only is the recommended and most effective strategy to suppress the transmission of COVID-19, but can also decrease the number of hospitalizations at a time and potentially save many lives in the process [1, 7]. In this research paper, a Faster Region Based Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R-CNN) is implemented, optimized and tested to automate the process of identifying the people who are wearing masks and not wearing masks from images.
